In this chapter, you play as Atreus.
When you are ready, as mentioned at the end of the previous chapter, nav assist and interact to take a seat at the table for what turns out to be a very lengthy cutscene. Note that you might have to move to your right to get around geometry and find said prompt.
Once you regain control, nav assist to an interact prompt, triggering another sequence, which is not skippable.
Once Atreus says I gotta get out of here
, nav assist into yet another cutscene.
Once you regain control, nav assist to an interact prompt and hit it to slide. Then continue to nav assist and auto-traverse.
Continue onwards until Atreus says I’ve never seen a forest like this before
and you come to another interact prompt, you may have to look up to hit it.
Hitting said prompt triggers a cutscene. Here, you’ll be introduced to another member of God Of War Ragnarok’s cast, Angrboda and after the cutscene completes, you’ll get an update to your objective.
Post cutscene, nav assist your way along until Angerboda speaks a word, at which point you’ll also get a prompt for new skills being available.
If you haven’t done what I did and spent all my available XP on previous skills, you might be able to purchase some of these via OCR.
Nav assist until your feet stop moving, then aim and hit a heavy attack cue to shoot an object blocking your path. Repeat this twice more, utilising auto-traversal where required.
From here nav assist and traverse your way along to an interact prompt and hit it to progress, then nav assist to another prompt to start a climb.
From here, nav assisting to reach the top should get you into a brief scripted sequence, followed by some combat.
Enemies dealt with, nav assist to an interact prompt and move forward, then continue nav assisting and traversing.
Keep an ear out for an interact prompt on your right for a resource chest and Atreus should ask whether an object is chainmail.
Once your feet stop moving with nav assist after some traversal, aim for a prompt that has no sound.
Shoot this object with a heavy arrow then hit the interact prompt underneath, spawning in a couple of nightmares.
Nightmares eliminated, nav assist, drop down then run to climb up onto another platform. Finding this climb can be a little tricky, turning to your right should let nav assist guide you on to the surface you need.
From here, press nav assist and aim. There’ll be no sound once again, but you should be able to fire a heavy arrow and hear a crash to your left as a result.
Continue to nav assist forward and climb up again, nav assist’s audio cue, at least on PS5, should be in the centre of your speakers.
Note: If your feet stopped moving before you climbed up for a second time, aiming and firing a heavy arrow, or rolling to your right, should dislodge whatever obstruction blocked your path and let you clamber up to the required surface.
From here, press nav assist and aim and, if you don’t hit the next shot first try, move your right stick downward slightly (I can’t give you a number for how long to do this for unfortunately).
If your shot is successful, you should hear a much larger crash than the last one and should be able to progress via nav assist and an interact prompt
Said prompt does however lead into more combat.
After these enemies are taken care of, continue nav assisting, traversing and interacting and you’ll enter some more combat with a greater number of enemies.
Once they’re dealt with, nav assist onwards. Hitting an interact prompt on your right should open a legendary chest that unlocks the Rampaging Ibex summon, activated like you would with a heavy runic when actually playing as Atreus.
As you continue you’ll eventually start climbing, with Atreus saying everything’s ok
whilst ascending.
Once you reach the top, keep nav assisting until you can’t move forward any further. Aim upwards for about half a second or so then shoot a cue that has no sound.
This should result in a large crash and reveal an interaction prompt, though this has previously taken a few tries at times.
Hitting said interact prompt initiates a longer traversal than is customary, so that’s how you know you’ve progressed correctly.
There’s actually a second one behind this too containing a scripted sequence, so hit this as well to continue.
The next combat sequence is just a few nav assists away after some more dialogue, where we see companion actions reappear.
Post-fight, nav assist to an interact prompt to lift an object out of the way.
That done, nav assist your way through the next traversal sequence (which I won’t spoil), hitting interactions when prompted.
Continue moving until you hear the mention of Tatzelwurms, an enemy from the previous game, as well as seeing a tutorial for a summon. You know what to do from here.
After that battle is finished, nav assist until Angerboda opens another door and you can continue forward. With Atreus asking whether Angrboda lives there, I’d suggest you save as that is where you’d continue from.
Eventually you’ll come to an interactable that triggers a cutscene.
After the cutscene ends, you’ll get a quest update. Nav assist from here until you find an interaction prompt. Activate this, then walk forward where you’ll meet a new friendly face of sorts in Jalla.
Nav assist then interact to climb onto Jalla’s back and control movement much as you would with the boat. Continue forward, interacting when prompted then nav assisting, until you are on dry land again, if briefly. Interacting with a couple of separate prompts between dialogue will eventually get you back on Jalla’s back again to continue.
Once back on dry land again, keep nav assisting until Atreus says he can’t reach something. Wait a little for Jalla to help and the interactable prompt will appear. Using it doesn’t immediately let you progress, however. If you go towards the next distant interactable then look down if you don’t immediately see you’re close enough, you should see the prompt become usable. Hitting it will trigger more dialogue and you’ll be back in control of Jalla.
Riding to the next interactable, Angerboda will mention more fruit once you’ve used it to dismount. If you see an interaction prompt to your left during nav assisting, it turns out there might also be resources, so pick them up.
Nav assist, climb up, then move forward until your footsteps stop. Now, aim down for about half a second and shoot a couple of heavy arrows, though there is no cue. You’ll know you’ve succeeded when Angerboda calls Jalla again, at which point you can mount up (by looking down and interacting with the distant prompt as before) and continue. Atreus enquires about feeding the wildlife and meeting someone his own age. Keep riding until you automatically dismount and Angerboda starts talking about greenbulbs and tool chests.
Nav assist to interact with the bucket, then more nav assisting will take you to a further prompt, revealing an optional conversation.
As much as you might want to go and find out what Angerboda has provided for you in the tool chest, unfortunately there’s no audio cue, making it extremely hard to locate. If you do decide to wander around though, you may come across some resources and a couple of optional conversations, though they are technically not required.
The next interactable prompt will allow you to get back on Jalla’s back and move to the next area.
After moving for a while, you’ll end up on land and Angerboda will mention some roots. Continue moving and Angerboda will tell you to take only what you need. Move to an interact prompt and hit it to progress,
then nav assist and interact to return to Jalla.
You won’t be there for long though as nav assisting forward will trigger combat. As disclosed in the unnarrated tutorial, activate rage (L3+R3) then, do your thing.
Rage-fuelled combat over, nav assist and interact to get some more roots, then more combat.
Battle over, interact with the next prompt to call Jalla, then nav assist and interact again to get on her back.
Nav assist and Angrboda will say about putting roots in a bucket, you can find an interact prompt to do this. She then says that they should head back to the water, with Atreus asking whether Angerboda can turn into any animals once they do after nav assisting and interacting with Jalla.
Continue to navigate and traverse until Angerboda uses her magic again and, after a while of forward movement and more water, you’ll get to more dry land.
Once on said land, nav assisting then interacting will get you to a point where you can start skimming stones, with only a heavy attack prompt to give you an idea of how to start. These are scripted though, so don’t worry.
Keep throwing until, as you might expect from how this is going, another battle occurs.
As an interesting note, though rage is referenced at the start of this fight, it is not required.
Once those foes are dealt with, if you want to find the interact prompt to throw more stones, nav assist your way back to Jalla and look for an interact prompt to your left. Hit it then throw and practice to trigger a very short non-mandatory sequence.
If you’re stuck as to how to throw, the two quick pulses whilst holding down the right trigger, no aiming required, actually give you your timing as to when to release the stone, if you keep the same interval between each vibration.
Once you’ve finished with that, nav assist and interact to get back to Jalla and on your way, where Angerboda says she has a gift for Atreus.
After a while, you’ll dismount and need to nav assist to get on the lift that’s mentioned, which will automatically rise once you step onto the device itself. Once at the top, you’ll get an update to your quest once again.
Nav assist and traverse until you come to a fight, then continue onward to an interactable and more combat.
Those fights over, walk to another interactable and continue, with The Valley Of The Fallen being mentioned. The next interaction point you come across will trigger a cutscene.
With the cutscene done, more dialogue and a quest progress update will occur. Run for a while and you’ll get to an interactable to trigger more dialogue.
Nav assist some more and you’ll get to an interaction that, after some exertion, will trigger combat against some wulvers. Even on Give Me Grace these are tanky enemies, so be patient and use everything you’ve learnt to take them out.
Angerboda will drop a shortcut down for you, allowing you to leave the area via an interaction prompt. Keep traversing and nav assisting until you reach another lift with some dialogue and eventually, another quest update.
Run for a while and Angerboda will utilise her magic once again. Nav assist and traverse until a sinkhole is mentioned, prompting another objective update.
Keep moving forward and eventually you’ll get an interact prompt. Hit this then push forward to rappel down into a new area.
Move forward and interact when prompted, then Angerboda’s magic inadvertently triggers some more combat as you progress, specifically with wretches.
You don’t have the blades this time, but they’re just as squishy with the right tactics when playing as Atreus.
Wretches eliminated, nav assist your way to a companion prompt to get Angerboda to light a torch. These aren’t mandatory though as a gamer without sight.
Keep nav assisting, fighting and lighting (torches). Eventually you’ll get to a point where you can’t progress any further. Find a heavy arrow cue and hit that a few times to be able to progress through more combat and lighting as before.
Eventually Atreus will say I think that’s all of them
once you’ve cleared one of these numerous encounters. Nav assist your way onward and interact when needed, eventually you’ll come across a Bergsra. Remember that if you get close, you’ll have to deal with unblockable attacks as well.
Once the Bergsra and its accompanying wretches are dealt with, Jalla will be summoned again and you can leave via the interact prompt.
Heading around the sinkhole, with the quest update sound still in your ears, you’ll reunite with Jalla.
Ride until you get to an interact prompt, which starts a short sequence where you initially lose control, but can walk forward after a while to get out of it.
After this sequence, nav assist to get an interact prompt and ride until you reach another cutscene, where you meet a formidable individual.
Nav assist and traverse into more combat. Continue to battle and traverse until Angerboda starts warning Atreus to not do anything drastic if they run into Gryla. This is a checkpoint, so I would suggest saving here due to what comes next.
Now we come to a rather frustrating puzzle sequence, but here’s what to do.
Puzzle:
Here, at times, nav assist doesn’t work as expected, which makes it challenging. . Here’s what to do to get through this tricky section, the below instructions should work for either build.
- Run forward and climb up on a platform, then nav assist once to orient.
- From here, aim and shoot. Note that moving your right stick downwards a little might give you a heavy attack cue, though it is not required.
- make this shot and you’ll hear something break if successful, revealing a distant interact prompt.
- Next, drop down just by moving forward via auto-traversal, then run forward until your feet stop moving.
- From here, nav assist and move slowly forward. If you see an interactable to your left, move towards it.
- Hitting this prompt and going through should move you to the correct area to allow you to continue the puzzle.
- Once you’ve gone through a relatively silent animation, run forward and you should traverse up the first of a couple of platforms. If you don’t auto-traverse up, try turning to your right a little and you’ll get there eventually.
- Moving forward manually from here should get you to the second platform.
- Stay up on this higher level and hit nav assist once, then look down slightly if you aim and don’t get a cue.
- If done right, aiming should give you another heavy attack cue to shoot, alongside an interaction prompt (which you can’t seemingly do anything with as per my testing).
- Shooting this heavy cue can be a real pain as it’s seemingly quite a small area. If you do eventually hit it though, you might hear Angerboda say something to indicate that you can progress as normal in addition to a faint breaking sound you should be accustomed to by now.
- Nav assist forward and interact where needed to get out of this accursed puzzle area.
end of puzzle
As you nav assist, you’ll eventually drop into more combat, where you’ll be accosted by at least one Wulver.
Battle done with and dialogue triggered, keep nav assisting, interacting including with a resource chest to your left shortly after the fight, and traversing, until Angerboda mentions that “this is Gryla’s home
, at which point, once again, we advise you to manually save.
Another puzzle awaits, after a little more running.
Puzzle:
- When your feet stop moving after some nav assisting, with Angrboda observing there is
another way in
, your objective is to look for a platform to jump up to. - This is relatively simply achieved by walking a little to your left, and then using nav assist if it doesn’t take you there automatically of course.
- Climbing then dropping down via nav assist into auto-traversal, you’ll come to an interactable.
- Hit this to swing across, Angerboda will mention more about finding
another way up there.
- now comes the tricky part.
The Tricky Part
- Nav assist your way onwards until you climb onto yet another platform. Once you’re up there, nav assist so a distant interact prompt is now in the centre of your speakers.
- aiming and looking down slightly if needed you may hear a heavy arrow cue, though if you don’t you can still take the shot.
- If you’re successful, hitting this should cause a large crashing sound and allow you to progress, though it may take some time and a few attempts, maybe even a save reload or two to make sure you’re in the right place.
- Sometimes you can even hit the object without the interactable being present and nav assist being to your left around 80 degrees or so, but once the cage crashes down and the dialogue triggers, you’re able to continue onward, marking the end of this puzzle.
end of puzzle
Nav assist to the next interactable (another shortcut that Angrboda lets down for you), then keep traversing for more dialogue.
Keep nav assisting and traversing until Atreus remarks on the size of all the objects around them, the next interactable will see you turning a key and lifting a very heavy door. If you’ve run too far, you may have to role backwards and re-locate the interaction prompt.
Door opened, keep navigating and dropping down until you can’t progress any further. If you’re in the correct place, you should be able to find a heavy arrow cue (though depending on where nav assist takes you, you may have to restart checkpoint to find it).
Shooting this successfully will see Angrboda say that’s it
.
Now nav assist until you trigger a cutscene, though said feature might temporarily not get you directly to it. Just be patient with it and move around until you can run straight into this sequence.
Cutscene over, nav assist and traverse until you get to an interact prompt; closing a door is mentioned when you hit it.
Once the animation’s done, navigate to two more interactables, the second of which will trigger another cutscene
After the cutscene, your quest progress updates, and it’s time to set a prisoner free.
Move forward, nav assist won’t work here and hit an interactable prompt. You’ll then be caught by Gryla in a cutscene of sorts, ending with the line get out of my house!.
Gameplay resumed, here, the nav assist doesn’t work, as the game thinks you’re in combat. This makes this section more complex than it should be as a result.
Please note that we’ve tried to find the best way to get through this section, but can’t guarantee it will work for you on the first attempt or even after a few.
If you find an easier way to get through the following section, then please let us know.
Navigation Puzzle
Your objective seems simple in that you have to follow Angrboda to get into the kitchen. However, you are being pursued by the much larger Gryla. For reference, if Gryla attacks, use evade to dodge.
- Manually turn to face Angerboda, she should be almost directly behind you, and you should find an interaction prompt. Hit it to traverse to the first area of this puzzle.
-
Move forward and then turn 90 degrees to your left to follow Angerboda up an auto-traversal, where Atreus will ask
are you sure you wanna go back there?
. Note that sometimes this dialogue won’t play, but you’ll still climb the auto-traversal element if successful.
,/li> - Now run forward and when your feet stop moving, start turning to your left with a tap and release in time with every second beat of the theme music you’re hearing. This works out probably to around once every actual second, though your counting may vary of course. If you can, use the music for consistency, just remember that it’s every two beats of each bar if you’re musically inclined enough to understand what that means.
- As you turn left, you’ll need to keep repeatedly sprinting forward. Eventually, Gryla’s voice should be almost at the centre of your field of view, but slightly to your right.
- You’ll get to a point when you run forward for a short distance and then stop moving. Keep turning left and you’ll run for a longer distance, Keep turning whilst you’re running with the same tap and release style you’ve been using the whole time and you should, all being well, traverse up to the next platform.
-
Note that this tap and release style of turning combined with movement is referred to elsewhere in this guide as
Gryla turning
. - If you need to try this multiple times to get it right, restarting the checkpoint should leave you at the very start of this puzzle, so you can attempt it as many times as you need to, starting from the manual turn of around 180 degrees to move towards Angrboda via the interact prompt.
- Now that you’re up on this new platform, run forward until your feet stop moving, then turn left again for about half a second (or 90 degrees). If you’ve got everything right so far, you should be able to run forward and auto-traverse to another new area, this time with no dialogue. Be aware that you might also just climb up directly, which is still useful.
- Finally repeat the same trick of running forward, but turning right afterwards instead of left, still by around 90 degrees. Gryla’s voice should be almost directly to your right and slightly behind you.
-
If you’ve done everything correctly, there’ll be another auto-traversal on to a final platform. Once you’ve turned to your right slightly and are able to move forward enough in this new area, you’ll be able to trigger some Angerboda dialogue where she’ll say
we have to destroy the cauldron
. - If you feel more comfortable, you could even use the above musical strategy to allow you to get through these sections, just remembering to switch directions when necessary. This should get you through this entire puzzle from the second platform onwards, though I understand this method might not be for everyone.
- Angrboda’s dialogue triggered, move forward here to drop down and find an interactable. Hit it, then hold when prompted. This ends the navigation section and begins…
<!–original instructions
turn left 90 degrees. Run forward again and when your feet stop moving a second time, turn slowly to your left until you start moving forward, you should feel like you're going back the way you came, with Gryla slightly to your right.
Once you’ve gone forward a few steps, you should be able to turn back to your right, so that you’re directly facing Gryla’s voice and, moving forward, climb a second auto-traversal.
This last part is unfortunately pretty tricky to get right,, but
–>
End Of Puzzle
Boss Fight: Gryla
The idea here is to keep your distance to an extent. Your arrows will do a fair amount of damage here and Angrboda actually gives some great tips during the fight as well.
Use interact prompts to keep off the floor or move out of the way of attacks and, later in the fight, hit square when Gryla goes to attack you and you’re near a companion prompt, and if successful she should be stunned giving you an opportunity for a lot of damage.
Do this several times and you’ll eventually get a hold prompt for stun, indicated by a loud growl from Gryla, and her not attacking for a sustained period of time. Run in, drop down if required and hit this and go through the associated QTE, concluding the fight with a long cutscene.
End Of Fight
Cutscene done with your objective will change, as will Angrboda’s demeaner. Keep walking and interacting until you trigger a further cutscene.
After that sequence, nav assist to the next prompt which, it turns out, is an optional conversation. There’s at least one other one around here as well, so get those if you want after accepting this one. If not, interact and you’ll trigger another long cutscene, ending in combat.
These foes eliminated, you’ll get a new objective; nav assist to get into another cutscene, followed by more combat.
After dealing with this second set of foes, that’s not quite the end of things.
Boss Fight: Vanadis
If you’ve played the 2018 God Of War or seen footage of it, you’ll likely remember Valkyries, optional bosses that were very hard to take down in certain instances and certainly not to be taken lightly regardless.
This is one such winged combatant and she comes in strong with a hold QTE prompt.
Once out of this though, keep your shield up, dodge the unblockables and counter when you have a turn. Eventually you’ll get her health to a point where an in-fight cutscene triggers, bringing up a tutorial for rage replacement.
In this instance, Fury, the rage mode where you punch enemies to regain health, is replaced by Valor, a short burst-style activation that can negate incoming attacks and give you some health back, in addition to boosting your own attack for a short time if used correctly. Think of it like a strange version of a parry if you want to learn how to use it.
If you want to switch your rage back to Fury, you can do so in the weapons menu (though the direct process will not be covered here and is best performed with OCR).
Surviving this battle and watching the resulting cutscenes starts Chapter 6.
