Chapter 8: Into The Fire

In this chapter, you play as Atreus, accompanied by Thor.

After Thor and Atreus’ discussion finishes, do as the tutorial says and press left on the DPad by default to equip the mask. This uses haptic cues to let you know when nav assist is taking you in the right direction, though you can’t sprint whilst using it unfortunately.

Mask equipped, you’ll get a narrated tutorial explaining more on how the mask works as well, hit confirm to close it.

Quick Navigation Note

After that tutorial, if you don’t want to have to deal with the slow, albeit cinematic walk imposed by the mask being active, you can instead ignore the prompts and just nav assist as normal. You need only pull the mask out to trigger progression dialogue or other related interactions.

End Note

With Thor having opened up a path forward, navigate with the mask out or not, as you wish. Continue moving and you’ll come to some enemies in a new area.

With these beaten back, continue as before, with Thor asking where are we supposed to head now? or similar.

Atreus comments about a ledge and Thor will assist you in getting to it, entering another combat encounter.

Combat over, Thor discusses the blood payment with Atreus. Continue navigating and Atreus will mention getting through some rocks.

Navigating through the now cleared area, Thor talks about a blight on the 9 realms and Atreus mentions Surtur’s trials. These were a feature of the 2018 game and technically are included in this one too, though you wouldn’t be able to access them without assistance sadly.

Eventually, you’ll come to an interact prompt that starts a climb and, once you reach the top, you’ll trigger a cutscene that leads almost directly into more combat.

After that fight, navigate onwards and you’ll get some dialogue about finding a way down. Thor will interrupt and ask Atreus to come look at this.

Nav assist your way to him and he’ll get you to Surtur’s Shrine, as identified by Atreus.

Picking up the small hacksilver interact on your left, nav assist your way back to Thor, at which point more combat starts after another brief dialogue exchange.

I would save here at the start of this fight, as, even though you’d have to repeat this fight, there appears to be a checkpointing bug during an interaction after this battle.

This can be a tough fight due to an Ogre being present, but if you’re patient and on the move, you shouldn’t have too much trouble at lower difficulties.

At the end of this fight, Atreus will say that The All-father has waited hundreds of winters.

To get to the next area, nav assist until your feet stop moving. Then turn 180 and look to your left for about half a second. If done right, Thor will use his hammer to fly to the trials, triggering progression.

With Thor off fighting after a quest update, Atreus says Now to get to that shrine. Nav assist to an interact prompt and move forward through it, then you’ll see a second one on your left, With Atreus asking Ingrid if she trusts the Aesir.

This next interaction is, unfortunately, the one that can be buggy to find if you restart checkpoint. If you hit the previous interact with Ingrid’s conversation and are struggling to find the prompt to your left after going manually forward (as nav assist breaks here and leads you the opposite way), load your most recent save instead.

said interaction starts a climb sequence.

Go through the first interaction prompt as normal. From here you have the ability to go to a cave for a relatively tiny amount of extra hacksilver, though it makes things very complicated and isn’t currently documented here for the sake of easing frustration.

In order to get to the main story path for progression, move to the right from here with the left stick. Once you clear the prompt, move all the way to the right until the haptics stop.

From here, move your left stick diagonally down to the right. If you get a string of haptics rather than just a couple, continue holding this and you’re in the right place. Eventually you’ll end with Atreus saying There’s the shrine. You should automatically exit the climb and drop into the next area, though it won’t have a haptic or much of an audio indicator that this has happened. Nav assist working and you being able to run forward is the indication that you’ve reached the next combat encounter and story progression.

Once the music starts playing for the encounter, you can save here and you’ll start at this checkpoint via sprinting forward into the fight on loading your save.

<!–If you can't hit the interactables to progress, try looking upwards for the first one you get stuck for.

After Atreus says about him and Kratos visiting this place, you’ll have to jump to your right as part of the climb. To achieve this, push right on your left stick and simultaneously look down with the right stick to get the prompt.

For the final one, look to your left and hit the prompt, though you may just need to go forward.

The above section was very tricky to get right consistently in testing.

Eventually, Atreus will say that he sees the shrine and you’ll enter combat.–>

Keep running and using lock on to progress via combat, shooting any companion cues with light arrows. Once that fight’s over, continue nav assisting and you’ll get to an interact prompt that triggers a cutscene.

Another cutscene triggers after the first and, once that’s done, nav assist to an interact prompt.

From here, after a quest update, continue onwards until you get to an interact that starts another climb.

This climb is tricky, or more specifically, getting to solid ground is. Climb until you can’t go forward any further, then, to disengage from the surface, push the left stick down and left until you hear an interact prompt to your right.

If you do find this prompt, try and hit it and move backwards before nav assisting, otherwise you may end up just sticking to the surface.

If successful, you should now be able to move into the next area via an interact prompt, where you’ll hear Thor back with you in true dramatic fashion to begin another fight.

Saving at the start of this fight would also be helpful, as you’ll end up just before the interact prompt that begins it, after the climb.

You are forced to fight these enemies until Thor intercedes directly, then follow the mask once again.

Atreus will talk about needing to go through a gate and, after some more nav assisting, Atreus will say this is the spot. This initiates a QTE, followed by a further cutscene after some more nav assist and a raven transition.

With this Odin-related sequence over, nav assist and interact where needed, until Atreus says This has been a weird day.

If the game allowed for this easily, you could, in theory, upgrade your gear from here. However, the prompts would be tricky to locate, so just continue nav assisting until you trigger a cutscene to end the chapter.
