Quest Realm: Midgard
Note: I originally wrote these instructions immediately after unlocking the quest, during Chapter 9: The Word Of Fate. However, I would highly recommend coming back to this much later.
Once you’ve tracked the quest, nav assist and climb down the chain.
Nav assist onwards and eventually you’ll get to a distant interact prompt, which is actually a drop down.
This can be a little tricky to traverse but a little patience and some movement to your left via turning the camera and movement of the left stick to position yourself just right, combined with nav assist will hopefully get you through.
Nav assist onwards and, eventually, you may get to a point where The Oarsmen are mentioned (referring to a well-known statue through this duology of games).
Once the sled stops, dismount then traverse through a new area to an interact prompt, which opens a door.
Nav assist onwards until your feet stop moving, then aim and you should find a blades prompt. Hit this to ignite geometry blocking your way.
Dropping down into a new area, the party discusses another marking, a first outpost preceding further expansion
.
Traversing onwards will get you into combat with some enemies that require the blades to remove their shields.
Once those enemies are defeated, Freya will say about what Sigrun wanted to do before she joined the Valkyries. If you can hear it there is also a mystic gateway here, should you wish to recover lost health and rage, though it may not be easy to find as it is back before combat began.
From here, with Freya pointing out there must be another way around
, traverse upwards and interact with a climb prompt.
Reaching the top will see you enter more combat, including against a stalker, much like the one you fought towards the beginning of the game.
My advice would be to take the ad on your left out first, then hit the stalker until she summons a second ad which you can also remove. This means that you can finally focus on the main threat once again.
Note that the smaller ads are blade shielded, so you’ll have to play smart to get this fight done.
Though in a subsequent run with additional side quests done I got through this fight first try, in the original run I used my resurrection stone here, we’ll see if it pays off.
Enemies defeated, navigate to a chain and climb up it, then drop down. You’ll see a raven on your left that you won’t be able to hit, at least not in this revision if at all.
Keep navigating and an interact prompt, starting with a loud sound of debris moving, should cause Freya to say There it is, the other staircase
once the animation concludes.
Nav assisting from here, you’ll run into combat with some wisps. Deal with them and nav assist should take you to an interact prompt to open a door.
Your next interact will provide a discussion of a key broken in half, as well as a quest update.
Continue onwards via nav assist, past a locked Nornir chest and a mystic gateway to your right, dropping down into a new area with an interact prompt just round the corner.
This prompt opens another door to exit back to the lake itself.
The Second Half
Keep moving and you’ll find the sled, should you wish to use it to get you to your next destination on this quest.
Navigation should eventually lead you to another interact prompt, this time for another chain. In fact, this is the area where the quest began.
Do note that I did have trouble getting to it on foot during testing, but a little patience was rewarded not long after rolling to the right once.
Indeed, similarly to that first area, Sindri is at the top of the chain awaiting your arrival.
Find the shop manually and you should be able to, if you need it, purchase a new resurrection stone. I had the superior one available at this point in my main journey should you want the extra health upon revival.
Nav assist to a blades grapple point and hit it to drop down, then continue to a:
Puzzle
- If you aim and throw at the object in front of you, Freya might say about it only rotating one way. However, if she does, all you have to do then is aim to the right slightly for a second target and hit its own associated throw cue.
- If successful, you’ll hear a mechanical chain-like sound and see an interactable come into view
- Use this to lift yourself onto a platform via the blades, then nav assist into ranged combat.
.
End Of Puzzle
Enemies defeated, there’s a stationary raven to your right which you can hit with the axe but it a very high throw you have to make to account for the drop. It might be best doing this later with a different weapon.
nav assisting will give you a throw cue, which puts the crane back into place.
Hit this cue and move on via another blades prompt, where Mimir talks about Sigrun’s home being in a terrible state.
From here, there should be a Raven to your left that you can hit from this vantage point, though you’ll have to aim slightly upwards from the prompt you get in order to make the shot, as I believe you’re accounting for the drop of the axe. This is the same raven as above, but you can hit it from multiple locations.
Now, turn to your left and run forwards. If successful, nav assist may be able to take you through a drop down via the blades.
From here, nav assist through some more blades traversals to get back up onto the platform.
Nav assist might get a little stuck in a loop of sorts, but be patient with it and you should eventually navigate your way to an interact prompt that works like a gate which you may have seen before now, with a subtle double haptic.
Hit said prompt and pull back on the left stick, then disengage with circle by default.
From here, nav assist to drop down and use a blade point to grapple into combat.
Once these blade shielded enemies are dealt with, nav assist, drop down, then grapple to yet more enemies.
Defeat this combination of wisps and other enemies, then nav assist onwards as Mimir talks about the outpost holding treasure.
Moving onwards starts another:
Puzzle
- When your feet stop moving, roll left to break an obstruction, then nav assist, drop down and run to an interact prompt.
- This is a puzzle mechanism similar to those you’ve seen previously, except you need to push this one forward.
- Once it’s all the way forward, with no need to disengage, aim and you should get a throw cue to hit, which will make a grinding noise with chains if you’ve hit the correct one.
- If you haven’t hit the correct object, aim slightly to the right for a second throw cue and hit that to proceed.
- Now pull the mechanism backwards with the left stick, to which Freya will respond
well done
.
End Of Puzzle
From here, nav assist through 3 blade points, then press nav assist once but don’t move when you’ve gone through the third.
There will be 3 prompts in this area. From right to left they are a rune read (which gives XP), a very useful legendary chest and finally a blades traversal up to where the key is.
If you do accidentally hit the blades traversal up, just 180 and drop back down as you’ve likely done before this with other similar situations.
If you go manually forward, you’ll encounter the aforementioned blades interact prompt. Moving slightly to your right and then forward again should lead you to the legendary chest, which contains the Ivaldi’s Anvil axe heavy runic attack.
Chest opened and runic obtained, possibly alongside that rune read, nav assisting onwards, you’ll find the second half of the key via an interact prompt.
After this, you’ll be able to find the interact prompt for a chain via nav assist, climb down and continue onwards. After dropping down via a blades traversal, you’ll unlock a blade shortcut and dropping down into more combat.
A strategy I discovered for this area (thanks to Mila) was to drop down, manually run forward until the white appeared, then immediately turn 180 and grapple back up to where I’d just come from.
From this new vantage point, I was able to take out the white with my companion’s assistance and some axe throws, leaving just the smaller but also at times much stronger blade shielded enemies remaining.
Dealing with these shielded enemies and wisps, journey onwards until you find Sindri’s shop right in your path.
The Final Door
Nav assist to an interact for a chain and climb down it. Then continue to navigate until you reach the sled, with another of those slightly annoying traversal drops that you might have to turn left slightly to actually move through.
Take the sled until Freya remarks on a building that she’s never seen before.
Nav assisting onward, there’ll be a mystic gateway to your left should you want to refill health and rage as usual, listening out for its subtle hum to find it. Continuing to nav assist will take you, after some traversal, into combat.
These enemies all have blade-based shields, as you might expect from the way these fights have been going, so deal with them accordingly.
Enemies dealt with, there’ll be talk of a statue’s shield, starting another:
Shield Puzzle
<!–Note that as of the time of writing, this puzzle can be a little tricky and we're still checking for optimisations. If anyone has further information on how to make this rather involved sequence of interactions more seamless, please do let us know.
–>
- Nav assist to a blades-based interactable and move it to your right. Note that if you restarted the checkpoint, this interact will be forward and to the right of one that has the double haptic of a pull-based mechanism, as discussed earlier.
- Moving this will reveal a prompt for a climb, which should be to your right as well once you hit nav assist, though nav assist might not take you directly to it. Manually moving towards it also works
- When climbing up, look to your right for the first prompt, then heading forward should allow you to get to the top relatively smoothly. If not, just nav assist occasionally and let the traversal system take care of the intervening prompts, though this is a bit trickier than you might expect.
- Once at the top, nav assist forward for a few steps and aim. If you’re in the right place, you should be able to find a cue and throw to hit an explosive that will destroy an obstruction.
- Note that if you miss this cue and press nav assist again, you’ll turn to face a different area, so will need to look around for said cue again.
- Pot detonated, manually turn back to the prompt you just traversed with and, once on the climable surface, retrace your path down to the ground. You may also find a blades drop that will achieve the same result.
- Nav assisting again will take you to a prompt to move a mechanism backwards.
- Disengaging with said mechanism if required, nav assist should take you to the shield prompt, which you can move back to the left.
- Shield moved, nav assist will take you back into a climb. Once you reach the top, enemies will greet you, though you might have to run forward a little to engage these wisps.
- Deal with these, then nav assist through some traversal to another interact prompt.
- Move this prompt to the left, to which Freya may say
could be useful
, then nav assist onwards. - Drop down via the blades, past a Nornir chest on your left, then once you get to the prompt for the shield, indicated by the metallic clacking of the blades when you interact that you should be accustomed to, move it to the right again.
- After Freya says
Well done! Now we just need to open the gate
, you’ll have two prompts that nav assist will circle you between. Find the one that vibrates twice, much like those we’ve seen with gates or chain-based mechanisms previously.
We now enter a mini:
Sigil Puzzle
- Pull the gate mechanism back, if you haven’t done so already.
- There are two cues we have to hit, one in front and one to your left by just over a second.
- Find the left-hand of the two cues. Hit this with 3 sigil arrows then freeze it with the axe.
- Then, recalling the axe, find the second cue and throw the axe at it to freeze it in place, leaving the axe where it is.
- If successful, Freya will say
Well done
once again. - At this point, you need to disengage with the gate and run towards where the centremost of the two cues is, passing the shield prompt on your right (without hitting it of course). You’ll want to run for a long distance, you may hear a companion prompt or an interact prompt to your right. If you do, you should be safe to recall the axe, as you are through the gate.
- If you’re in the right place, Freya will say
rude
to which Kratos repliesit was not intentional
. - This passage of dialogue indicates you’re through the gate and have completed the main part of the puzzle, though you still have a final loose end to tie up.
- Speaking of which, if you do see that interactable, grab it as it is a legendary chest. It contains a companion accessory, as well as a wetstone to upgrade Freya’s sword.
Chainbreaker
- With the gate directly behind you, you should be able to turn 180 degrees and find an aim cue.
- If you want to find this cue and have moved, you should be able to hear the wolves and their sled. You can aim towards them to roughly centre yourself should you need to.
- Hitting this with the axe will release a chain, holding the gate open permanently so Freya can come through.
- Nav assist and aim to get a companion cue, then fire a sigil arrow at it and burn it with the blades to reveal the door’s interact prompt.
End Of Puzzle
Door open, you’ll get a quest update.
Nav assisting past a locked Nornir chest on your right leads you into
Boss Fight: Traveller Champion
If you thought standard travellers were tough, these ones are worse, as they have multi-hitting attacks that can do massive damage, as well as AOEs that you have to take down using the axe (flicking the right stick up whilst aiming to target their spell orbs).
Moreover, they can also block your attacks with their shield. If you try and start a combo and it doesn’t continue, that’s what’s happening. To negate this, dodge to the side and go back in and you should be able to carry on attacking them.
Once you get the hang of them though, they can be relatively straightforward, even if you can perish in combat with them at a moments notice.
Be aware though that during this fight, wisps will join in, so you’ll have to switch targets (flick right stick left/right depending on target direction) to deal with them, all whilst keeping the traveller in sight too.
Traveller and ads dealt with, you’ll get some dialogue as to who that traveller actually is.
Grab all the loot he dropped, then nav assist your way to an interact prompt that clarifies the story a little and completes the quest.
After this, nav assist to an interact to leave the area, then continue on towards the wolves to re-find the sled.
You can now return to your previous in-game endeavours. If you are progressing through Chapter 9: The Word Of Fate from here, a raider camp, allowing you to unlock Animal instincts once completed, should be to your left after a little while of running. This is useful if you’ve not already unlocked that particular side quest.
